The Ballad of the parabolic reflector

This was supposed to be submitted to a teacher of ours but due to sound advice by some of my friends I resisted the fatal temptation. Read for yourselves

Of a parabolic reflector we sat, Task whose noble is to reverberate a ray.

It makes a spherical wavefront plane, providing along with some directive gain.

But a wave plane which should have been carries now lobes minor along its being.

If isotropic had the source been the wavefront would have been clean.

But alas directive is the nature it knows, causing the cause of a few minor lobes.

The parabola as known to all thin and fat is but a curve drawn on a surface flat.

A polarization twisting we may use to make this effect diffuse.

The title of this post is actually the combinations of the names of the two greatest tragic heroes in fiction I have known, J K Rowling's Severus Snape and Sharatchandra's Devdas. About Snape I think I know a lot and Devdas I have not read yet but the life and tragedy of Snape was no less than Sharatchandra's immortal character. So just to give the non potter maniacs reading this blog a brief introduction to the great lover Severus Snape I write the following lines.

An all those who are not familiar with potter world let me give a brief introduction. Like our world; Harry Potter's magical world had a flaw the discrimination of people based on birth. A person of muggle (non magical) parentage was considered to be inferior to someone with wizard blood. This was like racial discrimination in South Africa or the caste system still prevalent in our India. Harassing someone for a thing beyond his or her control. Now as muggle parentage was considered a bane muggles were considered as an inferior race altogether. Muggle hunting was also proposed as sport. And like our world there were people fighting both for it and against it. The good guys naturally were against it. Lord Voldemort the main antagonist of the story is portrayed as a self hating bully; he himself being of half muggle parentage started a campaign against the muggle born people or mudbloods (used as an abusive word). His followers were known as the death eaters. The people resisting it from within the wizarding world rallied under Albus Dumbledore under another secrete organization named the order of the phoenix.

Dumbledore apart from being a great wizard was also the headmaster of Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry, the center of education for all the young magical population of England. And Dumbledore was said to be the one Voldemort ever feared.

Now wizards have a game known as gobstones and Hogwarts had a gobstones club. In the late 1960's the president of this club was a girl named Emmline Prince who eventually married a muggle named Tobius Sanpe. Snape was unaware of the fact that ms Prince was a witch and was shocked upon the revelation(as far as I know) however they continued to live together. They had a son who was named Severus.

With the birth of Severus Sanpe I take your leave and promise that will soon complete this tragedy all of whose rights are owned by Ms. J K Rowling.

Experience form Whistler (Part 1 of counting to 7)

The picture that is visible here may look unfamiliar but still there is an amount of familiarity to it. It somewhat resembles the screen we use to login to our respective systems that contain Microsoft Windows^xp. And it is not a screenshot from the upcoming version of windows. I sure will be talking about that soon enough here only but not now. This actually is a screenshot of the welcome screenshot of windows whistler and to tell the tale of whistler I must again press the rewind button. To the turn of the millennium this time (my readers (if any) might be thinking that I love to live in the past but this is a story I want to build upon right from the beginning.) So coming back to the year 2000 mid-January 2000 actually I refer to a news item on the internet "Neptune and Odyssey canceled for whistler".

Neptune and odyssey actually were 'would be' versions of Windows NT targeted at home and business users respectively. Windows Me had proven to be a sort of a nightmare for Microsoft. It had too many compatibility and stability problems to be usable and also it marked the end of the windows 9x series targeted at home users.

Before whistler Microsoft Windows was divided into two platforms NT for business users and 9x for home users. NT versions were found to be more stable and less user friendly. Odyssey intended to bring this stability to the user friendliness of 9x platform. Neptune was an upgrade to Windows 2000. But as both these projects were employing NT technology so these were merged under a common code name whistler which was to replace the windows 9x platform with the rock solid NT base while maintaining the user friendliness.

Whistler also introduced a new visual style to windows known as Luna. And if you are guessing where actually to get this version then it's my job to tell you that whistler was just a code name and its different from the final name of windows.

Actually every version of windows goes through a development cycle. In the first or alpha phase which is available only to the developers at Microsoft all versions of windows are referred by their code name. Then come the beta stages by the time final name for the windows version is declared and its beta or pre release versions are made available on the internet for testing purposes. Then comes the final release which is made available through retailers.

So whistler which was code named after a mountain stayed for about a year and a half in development. Its look and feel undergone several changes was finally released as windows experience (xp for short) on October 25 ,2001.

Though this information is redundant for the coming posts in these I just wanted to tell that how a version of windows changes as it is developed like this original welcome screen of windows xp.

The boy who lives

For those of you who have read Harry Potter (one of my passions) the above line is a changed form of the title of the starting chapter. This chapter involved his aunt, uncle, Professors McGonnagal (please forgive my spelling), Dumbledore and Hagrid. This also happens to be the chapter I read exactly five years back; in the late hours of November 15, 2003. The book that was in my hands was a result of the best media campaign I have witnessed till date for a book (According to me the ideas superseded even those employed in the original potter campaign). Again like Dumbledore's Pensieve I must take the scene back a few years as I want to share the story of publicity of "Harry Potter aur Paras Pathar" with you(only in case you don't remember it.)

The story starts on the eve of all hallows (October 31) of the year 2003. It was Saturday and those days Dainik Bhaskar (I hope everyone knows this paper they proclaim to be India's second largest read daily.) used to carry a special page containing suspense stories and stories about supernatural phenomena. On that page there was an article about Nicholas Flamel.(For those who don't know he was a real person who found acclaim due to the rumors of possession of the Philosophers stone.) The article was basically a biography of Flamel which can be found on Wikipedia. The interesting point about the write-up (this I figured out later) was that Flamel was portrayed as a character from Harry potter series and accompanying pictures were of Harry and Dumbledore(Daniel Radcliffe and Sir Richard Harris Actually.) The last line said that if Flamel is alive these days he will be enjoying the stories of Harry Potter. Sunday was an off day for papers (Saturday being diwali) and Monday's paper carried a half page advertisement of the Hindi translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter aur Paras Pathar") which was being marketed by new era publications; a subsidiary of DB corp ltd. The book was to be released on Nov 14 2003.

This was followed by a write up on JK Rowling in the women's supplement (madhurima) on Wednesday again carrying a picture of Dan Radcliffe. On Thursday there was news on the front page of the paper giving details about the book like the number of pages translator price and all the news also said that it will be released by the hands of LK Adavani (then deputy prime minister.)

Friday's Children supplement Bal Bhaskar carried a two page feature about the magical world of Harry Potter. And the coming week contained various news about the book.

The book was finally released on 14^th and I got my hands on it on 15^th. But the thing I wanted to emphasize is how a the articles in a newspaper were used for the purpose of indirect publicity. But the book did not did as good as was expected by the people managing the paper so book 2 "chamber of secrets" was released without any hype on July 5,2005.This was marketed by full circle India Ltd. The news relating to its released was published only in the local edition of The Times of India. Funny na.

Just Syaing hi

To anyone who is vella (Punjabi for idle) enough to read this. Hi this is my first ever blog post J ( taaliyaan ). So please don't expect much from me. am a jack of many trades and in the following lines will discuss some things  I will be writing about(even if no one reads actually it may be called as a form of psychological illness to write without caring that anyone doesn't give a damn about it.)(Another possibility is that after this first post I like other humans become too lazy to give a damn about this blog :P ).

To tell the story about this blog it all started with me downloading windows live beta where you get this nice tool known as windows live writer. So just to know what it all was about I started this blog just to test whether this works or not. However I trusted Google more and Microsoft word also provides a way to directly publish your post so I switched to blogger and word.

People around me (read friends) say that I love telling stories; so I would just tell a now (actually it's a memoire). It's about my belief in God and how he listens to my prayers in his own way.

I must rewind the scene however by a few days to Saturday November 1, 2008 morning 8:20. We had a viva of AI (artificial intelligence)(I forgot to tell I am a final year engineering student.) and as per the rules our files must have been complete(had it been not it would have mattered as our teacher is one of the biggest sadists I have known).So coming back to the story our files were required to be complete. Now some 9 hours back a friend of mine Munny as I call him and Prateek Khurana as his identity card says he is had called me up and requested me to get a print out for him before viva. He had told me that a certain shop starts business at 8:30 and hence I was standing at the door of that place at 8:30.But call it my luck the guy who operates computers was not there yet so stuck. I waited for some 10 minutes and then realizing that I was getting late for the viva scheduled at 9:00 so I made a run for it. After some 5 min I found out that I was really running out of time with only 5 minutes left. I then started praying like mad for anyone just anyone to come and save my neck from that beast we called our teacher. In less than a minute a hero Honda splendor stopped behind me its horn blowing upon me my eyes first turned with gratitude towards sky and then they fixed themselves upon the rider. It was a person equally loathed by our class of 74 ; Noora as we called him. He just told me to sit behind him which I was glad to; and off we went to UIET. I consider this one of many indications from God that he is watching over me.
